Waverley

(From our Eosident Representative)

MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE

WAVERLEY RESIDENT MISSING

Great anxiety and alarm prevails as to the whereabouts of the local dentist. Mr. J. Ryan, and it is fca/cd that some mishap has befallen him. At present the whole thing is shroud cd in mystery, mil we are unable to give any definite information, save the fact that Mr. Ryan left for Wanganui on Monday morning to intorview Dr. Wilson and for some reason failed to do so.

Mr. Ryan has for some considerable time past been in very poor health, and he was prevailed upon to sec Dr. Wilson with a view to medical treatment

On Monday- night, no word being received of Mr. Ryan, a well known resident and friend of his, got into tele phonic communication with Dr. Wilson but the medico had seen nothing of his prospective patient. The Wanganui hotels were then communicated with on Tuesday morning, and it transpired that Mr. Ryan had spent the previous night at the Criterion, but had left to catch the first train, ostensibly to return to Waverley. No further information could b< gleaned from Wanganui, and even Mi W. A. Prowsc, whose interests Mr. Ryan was attending to here knew nothing of his arrival in Wanganui. y No trace can be found of his subsequent movements, and as we go to press no news has reached us as to his mys-

tcrious disappearance. It would be premature to conjecture and theoriso at this stage but in the ab sence of any information from the sources from which we expected to hcai of Mr. Kyan's whereabouts, we car only surmise that something in the na ture of a calamity has befallen him.

WAVERLEY FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL DANCE,

Without doubt one of the most sue ccssful functions of the year was helo in the Town Hall, Wavcrlcy on 'Tiics day night, when the Fire Brigade held their annual dance.

For weeks past the dancing member! of the community had been lookinp forward with pleasurable anticipation to the event, and judging by the large numbers present, the annual ball haC lost none of its charm and popularity. Quite a feature - of the evening were the tasteful and charming gowns woru bv the ladies, and this pleasing display, radiating as it did a restful and sooth.ing ray of colour, greatly enhanced the general -effect. A capable and efficient orchestra, pro vided by the talented Nicholl family, supplied the music, and to the accompaniment of the rippling strains the dancing was continued until well into the early hours of Wednesday morning. The supper, provided by the ladies was done full justice to, and left nothing to be desired. To the ladies responsible the thanks of all are due, and great credit is also attached to them for their valuable services.

A high word of praise is also due to Mr. Oliver for the able manner in which he carried out' the catering. Through his efforts and painstaking regard for detail, the ladies were in the happy position of being able to provide a supper, which probably has never been excelled at other functions.

Messrs D. and L. Nicholls proved capable and efficient M.'sC, and to them much of the success was attribut able.

This year's danco will undoubtedly be remembered as the most successful yet held, and to all who contributed to its success, the greatest credit is due.

WAVERLEY BRASS BAND

A practice of the Waverley Band was held on Tuesday evening, and it is pleasing to report that good progress is being made. The band suffered heavily during the war, most of its members being on service, but now that Peace is with ns once more, and old members arc. returning home, it will not be long before the same high standard of merit is attained as obtained before the war.

A FARM CASE

BLUNDEN v. LIFFITON After proceedings which lasted three days, a civil action was concluded at the Supreme Court at Wanganui on Monday evening. The parties were John H. Blunden (Mr. Onglcy) who claimed £ll9 17s 4d against Edward Nolloth Liffiton (Mr. Treadwcll). The defendant counter-claimed for £360. The plaintiff was the manager of the defendant's farm at Upper Waitotara and it was alleged he failed to render the services he contracted to render. It was alleged that he sold off the farm a quantity of stock, produce, and had bought 10 rams against express instructions at £9 9s, when same were not worth more than £6 Gs. The loss of stock and farm implements were also alleged. The plaintiff's case was a denial in detail of the allegations made. It was admitted produce and stock was sold off the farm but plaintiff claimed it was his property. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £ll9 17s 4d, with costs on the lowest scale. The counter-claim was not sustained.
