ACADEMY PRESIDENT’S RESIGNATION.

it was announced at a general assembly of Academicians recently held that Su- Edward John JL'oynter, lit., G.C.V. 0., I'.lt. A. liad resigned the presidentship of the Royal Academy. Mho resignation was accepted with regret. _ Sir Edward hoyider, wiio was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1809 and Royal Academician seven years later, ha s been president sinoo 1890, wheri ho was knighted. A baronetcy was conferred in 1902. As a youth ho worked in Leighton's studio, and, after studying in English art schools, went to Tarts, where ho joined George da Jlaui'/.T. Alter ln fi return to England he took part in tho revival of wood engraving; he was engaged on the designs for tlie restoration of Waltham Abbey, and assisted Leighton in die decorations of South Kensington Museum. Ho was Slade Professor of Art at Univarsity College. London, from 1871-1375, principal of the National Art draining School, South Kenisngtou, till IRBI, and director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1905. For more than 50 years he has exhibited at the Royal Academy, and his works adorn tho walls of galleries in every quarter of the globe. An etcher, a sculptor, a designer, a water-colour painter, a mural decorator, a worker in stained glass and mosaics, as well as an artist in black and white, Sir Edward may be aptly described as an “all round” artist.
