The many friends of Mr H. O Clarke will regret to hear that he is still confined to hie bed with an attack of sciatica.
There will be no contest for the three vacancies on the . Wanganui .Education Board this year, as Mr F. M. Spurdle (North Ward), Mr T. Harris (Central Ward), and Ms Fred Pirani (Southern Ward), were the only candidates nominated up to the time of closing. This term will conclude Mr Picani’s 21 years’ service on the Board.
By the lest mail Dr.; J. W. Salmond (Solicitor-General) received from London the “ Swiney ” prize for his book on Jurisprudence. The prize is si vary beautiful gold cup (from a design specially prepared in 1849 for the first award by D. Maolise. the well-known Royal Academician), and £IOO in money. The cup itself is Valued at £IOO. The award is made jointly by the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Swiney, who died in 1844, left a sum of £SOOO to the Royal Society of Arts for the purpose of presenting this prize on every fifth anniversary of the testator’s death. Dr. Salmond, who has had a distinguished scholastic and official career, is .the fourteenth prizewinner.
