AN AUSTRIAN TRAGEDY.
Archduke and Dnchess Shot. Aa Inspector« General of the Monarchy’s land and eea forces, the Archduke Francis of Austria voyaged aboard the dreadnought Ymbus TJnitus from Trieste to Matcovic He was welcomed at Mostar and afterwards proceeded to the army bead quarters near Sarajevo with the view Of attending manoeuvres in the mountains to the south-west of Sarajevo. h There were two attempts at his assassination. The first took place f during Ilia drive to .a reception at Sarajevo Town Hall. A compositor threw what is called a bottle bomb, ... filled with nails and lead filings, it did not explodo until the car had passed. Tb<T explosion was very r violent, the fragments piercing the iron shutters of many shops in the vicinity. Twenty, including many members of the suite and several women and children, were slightly Francis and his wife were motoring from the barracks to . the Town Hall, and stoppedoutside the Girls’ High School. They had just re-started when- Grabsinoyics bomb struck the back of the oar falling behind it, and exploding under the second car, containing the Arc - duke’s suite. Colonel Memzo, one.of the occupants, was wounded m the neck. The Archduke stopped the car, and after learning what had happened proceeded to the Town Hall.
SHOT BY A STUDENT. The Described.
After a brief reception, while the Archduke Francis and hie wife were proceeding towards tne military hospital, whither the wounded aide--de-camp had been conveyed, Pnczip, a Servian student at the High School, dashed forward and fired two shots from a Broaging. pistol. The first hit the Duchess on the right side of the body, and the second struck Archduke Francis in the throat, severing the carotid arteiy. The Duchess fainted and fell at her husband’s knees. The Archduke alt j became unconscious. They were conveyed to Konak, bat both had meanwhile succumbed. The two criminals were almost lynched.
