FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' EUCHRE TOURNAMENT.

An Enjoyable Gathering. The first of a series of euchre tournaments between four of the chief friendly aocieties of the town namely, the Druids, Foresters, Fire Brigade and Band, was held in the Druids' Hall last Friday evening. Each society was represented by teams of ten men and a most enjoy* able evening was. spent. The games throughout were keenly contested and resulted in a win for the Druids, with the Foresters as runners*>up. The following is the result of the [ evening's play :

First round. Band beit Fire Brigade; Foresters beat Druids, Second Round,--Druids beat Fire Brigade ; Foresters beat Band. Third Round.— Druids beat Band ; Fire Brigade beat Foresters. Final.—Druids beat Foresters, After the games supper was handed round and was followed by an impromptu smoke concert, songs and recitations being contributed by Messrs Ramsbottom, Carey, Loader, Christensen, Ooogan, and others. Altogether the new departure was a distinct success and reflects great credit on the promoters, especially Mr A. B, Christensen with whom the scheme originated, and to whose energy the success achieved was chiefly due. It is intended to hold seyeral more contests during the winter months for a small challenge shield, each season's winners to have their names engraved on same and hold it for one year. Already a great spirit of friendly rivalty exists between the members of the different societies and there is no doubt that the object originally aimed at—a better feeling and truer sense of comradeship between all societies concerned—is practically assured, and the thanks of the community are due to those whose energy and foresight has made such a happy condition of affairs possible.
