SHIPPING STRIKE.

On Saturday a conference was held in Wellingtan between the Shipowners Federation and the Merchant Service Guild regarding the mates’ strike, and as a result a committee with Mr P. , Halley as president, was set up to consider the mates’ demands. This committee met-and decided on certain proposals which will be laid before a general conference this morning. Shipping, so far as boats from 100 to 500 tons are concerned, is now at a standstill. The Kinpaka arrived from Wanganni yesterday, and will lie up at Patea until a settlement is arrived at.
