HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION.
[ Mr Bennett Elected. The election of a member to fill the vacancy on the Harbour Board passed ! off very quietly yesterday, and there was a complete absence of that strong partisanship that frequently oceuis on such occasions, due, no doubt, to the cordial good feeling that existed between the contefctants. A good many Indies exercised their voltes during the nffcuruoon, but at no time during the day was tbero anything approaching a " rush " at the polling booth. The promptitude with which Mr Hcrner (returning officer) announced the resultd rather caught the candidates and their friends napping-, At 615 p.m, he announced the following results ; W. H. G. Bennett .. 126 votes W. A, Thompson .. 51 votes Informal .. 4 votes The only person present was a representalive of this journal, but Mr Thompson and several electors were approaching the booth, the elected candidate being absent Mr Thompson rose to the ocassion however, aud credially thanked those who had voted for him. He said never was there a more poiceable and friendly election fought in this town than the one to-day. • I wish to congratulate Mr Bennett on his success, aud I promiso to give _ him a better run for it at the next electionMr Thompson was warmly applauded at the close of his remarks, after which he moved a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, and the crowd dispersed. A few minutes later Mr Bennett was seon making his way towards the Council Chambers, and though too late to make a speech, a number of electors, including tho defeated candidate, congratulated him upon his success, and Mr Bennetl, bearing " his blushing honours thick upon him," informally thanked those present for their good wishes.
