Sergt. Griffiths, newly appointed to the station at Hnwera, was a visitor to Patea on Saturday.
The Patea Eifles will parade at Mnhouy’s Hall (to -morrow evening, at 7.30 p.in.
Mr W, J- Walter, who has for the past throe years been acting as Government Inspector at.the Patea Freezing Company’s Works, has received instructions to transfer to Wellington, and will take his departure some time this week.
Subscriptions arc being sent in freely to the Editor of the Manawatu Daily Times for the purpose of securing the legal services of Air T. M. Wilford, M.P., to defend Powelka on the murder charge which is to bo preferred against him. Ib.sidents of Patea can safely look forward to a genuine musical treat on Monday evening next, when those sweet melody and harmony makers—the Fisk Jubilee‘lingers—will give one of their unique entertainments at the Druids’ Hall.
A meeting of the Bowling Club committee was hold on Saturday to make arrangements for the annual social and dance to lie held about the end of next mouth. Miss Cameron and Messrs T. Campbell, Memo, Kennedy and Prii stley were appointed a committee to arrange details.
Of the many memorial services held on this coast on Friday last, probably that »t Palmerston North was one of the most impressive, as those soul-stirring vocalists —the Fisk Jubilee Singers—assisted in the musical portion thereof, rendering among other items the beautiful and appropriate. “ Steal Away," and “ Nobody knows the Trouble I've seen. 1 ' They also chanted “ Tho Lord's Prayer.’’

There are at present eight patients in the Hospital. Two were admitted last week and three discharged. Owing to pressure on our space, our football rdtyorts are unavoidably held over until next issue.
The ships in port were decked with bunting this morning, in honour of the visit of his Exbellency, Lord Plunket. The Borough estimates and a notification in regard to the rate for the ourreni year are advertised in this issue.
At the Memorial Service held at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral Wellington a violet velvet bier with the inscription “Edward YIL, ” in white immortelles, stood before the altar, on' which was a cushion covered with a Union Jack surmounted by a royal crown of crimson velvet and white immortelles, The altar flowers wore white azaleas and violets,
A few typographical errors occurred in a paragraph on dairy produce exports which appeared in our last issue. The total quantity exported to dale is 10,040 tons, A previous estimate placed the total for the current season at 10,000 tons, ami it is now estimated that an export of fully 11,000 tons will he attained.
Nurse Fletcher, who was one of the nurses is attendance on the late King at Biarritz and in London during tho illness .which proved fatal to him, is a native of New Zealand. Her father was tho Lev. Mr Fletcher, who was in the early days engaged in missionary work in the Auckland district. After leaving Now Zealand Miss Fletcher lived in Sydney for some years and from there wont to tho Old Country. In reply to a question as to whether milking cows can bo fed on turnips without giving the milk a “ turnip ” flavour, a correspondent of a northern paper says: If tho farmer is carting out the turnips to his cows, Ist him feed them after the evening milking and put, say, three or four carrots for each cow out with turnips; he will not then be troubled with any bad milk. If tho cows have a good supply of carrots along with .the turnips they can bo fed any time of the day;
The Borough Couucil met on Saturday evening:. Present ; His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. Christensen), Councillors Clarke, Grainger, Spooner, Ramsbottorn, and Simmons. It was resolved that- a rate of Is 9d be struck for the ensuing year. The increase upon last year’s rate is necessitated by the fact that interest payments in connection with the water and bridge accounts have this year to be met out of the general fund, which is in debit to these separate accounts. A shamfight will be held on Wednesday next, of which the objective will he the Patea Bridge. This the local Territorials are to defend against an enemy (the Wairoa Rifles) who will leave Waverley at about 1.30 p.m. Members of the local corps are requested to assemble at Mahony’s Hall at 1;30 p.m. A good muster is particularly desired in order that the defenders may be enabled to give a good account of themselves. A gentleman visiting Patea on Saturday pfiaid a graceful tribute to Christian fellowship and fraternal goodwill which pervaded Friday’s services in the Domain. Whilst readily admitting that “comparisons are odious,” he said he had been very agreeably impressed with the fact that all denominations and shades of political opinion had. obeyed a common impulse by being present on that memorable occasion. lie also made pointed reference to several much larger centres where this laudable spirit did not prevail. This ho deplored on broad, general grounds, as being contrary to the spirit of our times and the dictates of Christian fellowship.
