MONDAY, DEC. 21, 1908. Liquor Traffic Reform.
“Be Just and Fear Not.”
The question of reform in the liquor traffic is not generally considered to he within the duties of local bodies. The Horowhenua County Council, however, thought otherwise and at their last meeting carried a resolution, “ That the Clerk ascertain from the adjacent Borough and County Conn™ cils, their opinion as to the advisability of an amendment in rt the existing Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act, whereby the reduction clause shall be repealed and, in any electorate where no-license is carried, the control and sale of such liquors may, upon a petition signed by the same majority of the electors that carried no-licenso, and endorsed by a majority of the above Councils, become vested either in the whole of the said local bodies within such electorate, or by a Board elected by the people with power for financing same; the net proceeds, after providing for the relief of poverty, to be used in providing mental and physical recreation for the people of such electorate, and should the above Councils favor a meeting in Palmerston North, will they understate to be represented at same.” Hq will bo rather interesting to see what replies the Horowhenua Council will receive.
