Charles Edward Ashore at Castlecliff.

The Anchor Lin® Company’s steamer Charles Edward, while entering the channel ou Wednesday evening, ran aground immediately at the end of the breakwater extensions, says the Wanganui Chronicle. An extremely heavy sea was running when' the vessel crossed the bar and this, with the boisterous southerly wind, aad shallow water through neap tides is said to have kept the vessel off her proper course, and consequently turned her on to the breakwater. Owing to the heavy sea running, tugs were unable to render any assistance, but shortly before noon yesterday a wire hawser was got out to prevent further drift out of the channel. The sea yesterday'was sweeping over the vessel, which was full of water. It is hoped to refloat her to-day should the weather moderate.
