The first essential of an automobile is the power to move ; the second the power to stop. Without the first, the second is unnecessary. Without the second a car is u; eless and c’ .onerous. An operator can generally take his own time in starting, and consequently can do things in order. Eut oftentimes he rauststop suddenly. The consequences would be serious if bis car failed to respond. Stop ping is, therefo.e. a more important point than starting, because of the possibilities in volved. A powerful and quick acting braking system is necessary. The “ Russell ” brakes are double acting on large drums on the rear wheel. No strain is applied through gears, but direct to the wheels, as near the power delivery as possible. These drums are especially. All wearing parts are of metal and easily replaceable. The operator cun apply “ Russell ” brakes simply by pushing two foot pedals and using a single hand lever for cases of emergency.
