The Waverley Town Board moot tomorrow night. Threshing operations start to-morrow in rf crop of oats the property of Mr A. Riddell. The owners of the local threshing plant are having great difficulty in procuring hands for their machine.
Members of the different camping parties at the beach report seeing a number of sharks in the surf, practically hi very shallow water close to the beach. Great care should bo taken by bathers not to enter the surf too far and to keep a sharp look out while bathing. The Waverley bowlers arrived homo from Auckland yesterday. They are all very pleased with their trip, and speak very highly of the treatment they received during their stay in *he northern onv:
Constable O’Brien is on his annual leave. Constable Wilson, of Waitotara, is relieving him. The country round here is showing tho effects of tho continued dry weather. A good downpour of rain at the present time is sadly needed and would prove beneficial to all. Several residents in the town who have to rely on their tanks tor a water supply are getting very short of water. In many cases tho tanks are empty and residents have to carry water from neighboring wells. The cricket club are endeavoring to arrange a cricket match with Wanganui for 22nd January, Anniversary Day. All local players who will bo available for that date will oblige by sending in their names to the secretary. Mr 0. Symcs, jur., is on a visit to this district, He has come over to take delivery of a line of sheep to be sent over to the Hawkes Bay side. Smoko is thick in tho township this morning. Some largo fires must be raging in the back blocks. Visitors from the East Coast to this district are amazed to find such a growth of luxuriant grass in the paddocks. They assert that the country all through the Hawkes Bay district is very parched and burnt up. Mr Smith, who has recently sold his Kaimanuka property, is taking up a property in Wellington .and leaves for the city about the end of this month. A great opportunity of securing up-to-date goods at sale prices is now open at S. M. Brown’s.*
