BOWLING.
PATE A v. WAYERLBY,
Waverley determining that the Banner should not rest with Patea unplayed for sent a rink up on Saturday with the avowed intention of bringing it home. Though defeated as much honor rested with the losers as with the winners for the game was one of the most keenly contested and exciting mutches that has ever been played on the local green ; as one of the visitors remarked “I wouldn’t mind coming up and getting licked every week if we got as good a game.” Right through the scores were even. In the early stages Waverley got “ a four ” but Patea balanced up matters and from that on neither side got more than a lead of two, On the last head the scores were Patea 14 Waverley 16. On the skips going up Patea were lying one- McOorrevy failed to alter the situation with his first bowl but Williams drew and got another in; Patea were now even and McOorrery after a look at the “ head ” decided to play a firm shot but missed hy an inch. Then Williams rose/to the occasion and added another “ counter ” giving Patea the victory by one point. ' Intense interest was taken in the game all through and Wiliiams was heartily congratulated, and by none more warmly than his opponents, on his fine play. Waverley announced their intention of visiting Patea on Wednesday in quest of the Banner and hoped that as good a game would ensue but with a different result. The scores were : Patea. Waverley, A. Howitt B- Esse IT. E. Adams J. Rutherford E. Gilshnau I. Thurston G. Williams, sk, 17 J. McGorrery, sk. 10
