NAVIGATION OF THE AIL?
Tho French airship La Potno made an ascent lasting six and three-quarter hours. She travelled 269 kilometres. She was steered back to Paris after A record run. Sometimes she attained a speed of 30 miles an hour.
The La Petrie, with a crew of five, left Chalais Mend on a little before 9 a.m., and reached Verdun at a quarter to four p.m, without replenishing hydrogen. There is immense enthusiasm at the success of the airship,
SUICIDES IN AMERICA
' Lieutenant Crawford, Admiral Dewey’s secretary, committed suicide I in the Potomac river owing to losses in the banking crisis. A woman named Smith, who similarly lost £400,000, shot her husband and herself and set fire to the house after saturating the rooms wi!h kerosene, Loth are dead.
HALLWAY STRIKE RESUMED
The dismissal of the leading agitators in the Indian railway caused a renewal of the strike, which is extending to the Bengal-Nagpur line. The Calcutta Press expresses sympathy with the strikers.
ANOTHER PORTLAND CLAIMANT,
Madame Valette, an elderly woman living in Paris, claims to be a daughter of T. C. Druco’s son by a French woman. She asserts that Druce sent her father to Australia on a mission to discover his half brother., Re was away a year, and on returning to Paris footpads fatally stabbed her father, stealing his birth certificate and other, documents. Druce came to Paris terribly distressed, and gave her a sealed envelope, bidding her to guard it carefully. After hearing of Druce’a death, she was amazed at his entering her tobacconist shop four years after the Franco-Prussian war. On her expressing astonishment, he replied : “ Yes, Druce is dead, but Portland is still living.” She never opened the envelope, and now proposes to send it to Hollamby Druce.
MODERN CHINESE JOURNALISM
The historic Pekin Gazette, the oldest newspaper in the world, has ceased to appear. It is replaced by an excellent modern newspaper named Changchia Kuanpao, dealing with matters affecting the whole Empire.
MOTOR ADVENTURERS
A motor car tour has been organised in Paris. In February it leaves New York, whither the cars have been shipped, thence to Chicago, Klondyko, Alaska, across Behring Strait on the ice, Siberia, and so back co Paris.
THE BRITISH ARMY,
Mr Haldane, speaking at the Guildhall, stated that under the new territorial army scheme, London would furnish, in the event of war, two divisions, comprising 24 battalions, with yeomanry and artillery.
FIRE IN NEW YORK,
An explosion set fire to a tenement house 'in New York. Thirteen Italians perished and many were injured.
