Ralph Hotere

Ralph Hotere, the Dunedin artist, has been awarded a $6,000 Fellowship by the Arts Council. It is a recognition of the stature that he has gained as a painter over the last 25 years. Ralph Hotere has made a unique contribution to New Zealand painting, and his consistent 'development has confirmed that he is a major artist. His importance to New Zealand painting has been recognised in various ways in the past. 1969 saw him as the Frances Hodgkins Fellow at Otago University. And in 1970 the Arts Council gave him a major award. Important mural commissions have come his way. The Founders Theatre in Hamilton and the National Bank building in Dunedin both have Hotere murals. More recently, he was one of three artists commissioned to prepare murals for the new Auckland International Airport terminal. His mural is now in place and can be seen by in-coming passengers.
