The land where Turanga wae wae Marae stands was formerly confiscated land. The people of Waikato had to buy it back. It had been used for years as a rubbish tip but a Pakeha land shark w'ho heard about the intentions of Waikato to buy it got in before them and purchased it for $6OO. He refused to sell it to Waikato until they paid $3,000. a profit of 500%!
