Te Manu i Mate Wai.
(He Korero ma nga Tamariki.) I mate tetahi manu i te wai. Kua mimiti hoki te wai o te awa, mete wai ote repo, he tau raki hoki. Kimi noa te manu ra i tetahi wai mona, rapu noa, rapu noa kihai rawa i kitea. Haere ana te manu ra, pono atu ki tetahi ipu e tu ana i te taha o tetahi poka-wai, katahi ka peke ake, tu ana i runga i te niao, whakamaaro ana i tona kaki kia tae ilio kite wai, otira kihai rawa i taea iho, kei te takere rawa o te ipu te wai. Aue !me aha ra ? Kahore ia e kaha kite turaki i te ipu, kahore e taea te rapu i tetahi awa ite iwikore ona. Ka tirotiro noa ia, na, kua kite i etahi kohatu ririki e takoto mai ana, ka mea ake te whakaaro i a ia; "akuanei ma nga kohatu ririki ra e homai te wai mo taku hiainu." Ko tana tahuritanga kite harihari mai i nga kohatu ra, he mahi roa, kotahi hoki te kohatu i te mauranga mai, he mea hapai mai ki ona ngutu, ka whakamakere ki roto i te ipu kia puke ake ai te wai o roto. Ahakoa te wera o te ra mete hohonu o te ipu, heiaha mana tena ? mahi tonu, mahi tonu, na wai ? a tae ake ana te wai ki runga. Katahi ka inu te manu ra, ka makona haere ana.
