Kaipara 13th Novr. 1865 My dear Sir, I received your letter on Saturday last with the 2nd of Exchange for £500 on the Union Bank Auckland, Thisplaces me in an independant position and I feel a corresponding amount of jollity thereat. Old Keene who has just now left me roaring (you know what a voice he's got) when I told him you said in a letter that I was becoming more cross as I got old, a fact which some of them here have ocular demonstration of occasionally - I am very anxious to go to Napier to see you and shall be glad to try my hand at a Court. I propose to bring Keene and one or two of your old acquaintances with me - The £100 can remain until I see you I shall bring all the papers connected with our money matters with me when I go to Napier and deliver them over to you. In the meantime this will be a receipt for the £500 I am off to try and stop a row at Hokianga. Always yours, J. Rogan. P. S. I am sorry you have decided on not being a Native Minister even for a time, but if you are happy as you are perhaps it is as well as it is - I am eaten up here by Natives and the Govt. are becoming very stingey. They want to knock off the Chiefs or some of them from pay why this would leave me no where. The people here hold very little communication with me personally. The Chiefs rule them and I rule the Chiefs -
