the Northern settlers, and that Captain Panott, of the 58th. in a conversation with Dr. Muller, the surgeon of the "Stateley", and now with me, said he expected to have a brush ere long. Should old scores be revived, it is to be hoped a better system will he adopted by Goverament, and so effectually subdue the present overconfident native. I am still of opinion that riflemen and bluejackets are the boys to do the business; and the sooner they supercede the military in this country, the sooner will all prospects of outbreak be brought to an end. I have been running about until my pen shakes; and am off again to the beach with Muller; who is returning to the vessel. The wind is fair, and I expect she will soon be in Wellington. Nothing else to say, except that 180 men, 10 Officers, and one lady from the frigate, are now in Auckland. Yours very sincerely (Signed) H. Halse. To:- D. McLean Esq.
