Feb 4, 1849 My letter goes forth to Taranaki to McLean. Friend, greetings to you for which I have much regard. I have not much to say except to say that I have heard that you have said I had been a bad man, I had slaughtered the European as well as the Maori. I have seen the European way of life. When the European deceives the Maori, the Maori is hostile, and the European is tied up. It is under these circumstances that I stole the price for our pigs. This my son was the only reason. I am in agreement with the opinion of my elder brother, that while his body has passed on, his word will live on. With this I am fully in agreement. This thought of mine is in accord with that of Te Heuheu of Potatau and of Gawena. Having received your letter, I am full of regard for your letter and cordially invite you to come so that I can see you. From your affectionate friend, From Heuheu Iwikau. To theMcLean, Taranaki. Notes on translation: (1) Heuheu - Elder brother of Te Heuheu Iwikau, who was overwhelmed by landslides 1846. (2) Potatau - First Maori King, Paramount chief of Waikato. (3) Gawena - This name is obscure. Could be Governor. (4) Te Heuheu Iwikau - Paramount chief of Tuwharitoa Tribe succeeded his older brother. Overwhelmed by landslide. 1846. Trans. M.R. Jones
