Port Cooper 15th May 1851 Friend, McLean, Greetings. You are right in what you say about my fault. The reason I wrote to you was about the portion of Tapuae land, that it be left undisturbed, left alone until I get there. When I recover from my illness I will return to you and your people. I don't agree to give it now, in case things go wrong, but when I arrive the majority will decide. I don't agree that I should take over the release of the land; it's up to all the people to settle it properly. Wiremu Tamati also has a right in it. Don't listen to the talk of people who are giving over land to you, for I and my elders will give over that part to you when it is right, all in order. I have the overall right, along with Te Ngahuru and Parenga, and the majority. If some person should give it over, it will not go, I will take it back. That is all I have to say to you.
