Wakaiho 18 May 1852 Go off there, my words, to my friend, to McLean, and the Governor. Friends, Greetings to you both. I am here staying at our settlement at Ngamotu, at the place where you left behind our plans. And even if you go away elsewhere, our plans will remain with me always because they were nurtured out of goodwill. Friend, McLean, the letter from you and the Governor has come concerning the people you two have appointed. Now, tell me the reason for your appointing Te Waka and Hone Ropiha. Their names went into the government document of 6th April 1850, which is how I knew, knew at once. But now I ask you both if these men, Te Waka and Hone Ropiha have been dropped [from?] the twelve assessors. These two men, in my opinion, still stand with the twelve. The ones we approved were Te Waitere and Raniera, but you two did not appoint them, and you agreed to Tokeroa and Halse. And Iharaira was one who came to Halse and I to be appointed as an assessor. I've this to ask of you. Do you have a pound of Patara's, some shillings [from him]? If you say to me some shillings, £1, he will say his payment as guardian [?] was ten[?] He gave me that for my support of him while he was in jail. He spoke to Halse and I, and Halse agreed. He said it is quite true, twelve for a bag of flour, fourteen for half of sugar. If [you] say it is right to take that pound, then you have six shillings remaining for me. If you don't have it, then write to me. And once again concerning the land I'm asking for in town or elsewhere; if in town then perhaps arrange half an acre.
