18 May 1849 To Port Nicholson To Governor Grey and Governor Eyre Sirs, This is what I have to say to you. You are arguing that I should give over the land to you; give me some payment. If I leave you two my land, will you pay for it? Listen, I demand the payments for my land now, four thousand in one year for the side with Te Kawakawa on the outer boundary, and Wareama on the inner boundary. Listen, I had a committee meeting with you two about giving me the payments. If you agree to pay, then give the payments for the land to Patoromu and Karauria. If the payments are obtained for my land, I will leave it for you two. And I, I will go to Heretaunga, to my home there. So, if you take the land, I will go away. If you do not pay, I will not go. My good friends, if you should give the payments for my land to Patoromu and Karauria, they will go and deliver my letter, and they will bring me the payments. If you do not give the payments for my land now, I will not give the land to you hereafter, for it is not my business to pay for the land, you put the plan to me about your buying the land. So I agree that the payments be given for my land, when you two agree to my letter, for I approved of your document when it came to me as your request for land. Now, this is my request to you two for payment, to give it to me now, on the arrival of my letter to you. Well, this ends this matter of mine for you. There is another matter regarding the things of Pihawiti; you say I should row out there; I will not go. You have written to me that the ship will fetch me, and if there is no ship, the boat will fetch me, but tomorrow it will just stand there, and things could get bad [?].
