10 October 1853 Written to McLean from Waihinga Friend, Greetings to you. I've a message for you. Listen, it's our description of the place to be given over, and that to be retained. The boundary [for that] to be given starts at Waiwarawara, runs on out to Koroamanui and Motuopaka, and out to the source of the Kohiwai, then running directly along the Kohiwai river, at its mouth it runs into the river of Wareama; from Tukuwahine it runs right on to the mouth of the Waihora river, then on to the mouth of the Mangapokia, running on directly to Kurangi and Te Horo, it then goes straight into Mangapakia and runs on to Taumatahouhou, Te Wakatihi and Wakereru, coming out at Tauera and then, running directly along the river of Te Kauanga Te Huka, it runs on along the path of Te Kawangatahi, then along the river of Kuhumingi and directly on to the river mouth of Te Makino, running on then to Te Punanga-o-Purupuru, Motuopuha and Te Korokoro, and coming out in Wainuioru, where the outer [or, 'coastal'] boundaries end. This is the extent of the area, but it is for each person to state the boundaries of his area, just as the procedure for Wairarapa. Friend, McLean, we have very great affection for you. That is all.
