October 18 1845 Te Umuroa Friend Mclean, I have much regard for you. Your letter has arrived, an indication of that regard, therefore friend Mclean greetings to you. I have been wondering where you could have your place of residence. Here in this town or at Wanganui, or here in Wellington. This has been of much concern to me towards you. I and Hakaraia and Tamihana have arrived to fetch the cow which we will lead. The cows have been to water and are now have gone back. When the children went to chase them they were knocked over which made them cry, so we left them and went away from them. I am still of opinion to keep these cows, but Hone says it is a matter for Wiremu to say. I have written to him and he has replied that he has been trying to find out whether they belong to the Europeans or to Mclean. This is not my idea it is his own. However Parangi (Frank) and Kemara (Campbell) the owners of the cows have arrived and I have spoken to them and they have agreed to tie up the cows. This is all I have to say to you. From your affectionate Friend, Wiremuki Matakatea.
