September 30, 1847 Friend, Te Waka greetings to you. Hear what I have to say to you all. You should all hear that here is Te Rauparaha spreading the word to Waikato. Te Rauparaha is counselling Waikato to exterminate all the people of Wellington, of Wanganui and beyond. However Potatau does not agree. Never the less I have not heard of strong disapproval from Ngati Paoa, Ngati Maru, Ngati Tamatera, their main tribe being Waikato. These are the tribes I have sought to contact. When I hear of their general approval then someone will come in the person of Rangitau. When I hear the news during the summer from Te Waka, from Eruera from Wiremu Makaare. From your affectionate friend Te Kanawa 30th. September 1847. Friend Te Waka, Wishing you well. Listen, all of you to my word. Te Rauparaha is talking to the Waikatos. Te Rauparaha speaks to the Waikatos of destroying all the people of Port Nicholson, of Wanganui, and that Ngamotu will be the boundary. But Potatau (or Te Whero Whero) disapproves of this. But I have not heard what his opposition is. The Ngatiapas are strong (means in the scheme) The Ngatimarus and Ngatitamataras, these are his own tribes. It is the Waikatos I am now enquiring after. If I hear they will all consent, a person will be sent to you, that is, Rangitatau will go if I hear more talk during the summer. From your loving friend Te Kanawa. To:- To:- Te Waka. To:- Te Wiremu. To:- Makauri. (Signed) Donald McLean.
