New Plymouth November 10th. 1851. Dear Sir, The tuku whenua fit with uncertain Puketapu appears to have passed off and can be no matter of surprise after the forcible appeal to their tikanga from the Ngatiruanukuares - still I rely on their internal dispensing for a favourable adjustment of the great question in that beautiful district. Mr. Hulke may be considered to make application to you for a sheep run at Waiawa and I mention it today - supposing you could meet his views - such a proceeding so soon following the document relative to the kara tango whenua would have an injurious tendency with the writers of the document - moreover sheep will wander - natives will drive them to their places - quarrels will ensue and you know the sequel - I would therefore suggest that the application be refused particularly at the present somewhat critical period with the Ngatiruanui natives. Our place is getting overgrown with white weeds and should be uprooted before the seed. They had it all their own way last Saty. because the gentlemen who attended the first were not disposed to be roared at a second time. Captain King gets no better and will soon be unfit to perform the duties of his Office unless a great change for the better takes place. I saw him last Saty. and did not like his appearance. his appearance. I hope you have returned to the metropolis in case anything should happen to the poor old gentleman, I may be wrong in my opinion but I cannot divest myself of the notion that his time is close at hand - next mail will probably decided everything. Hoping you are well and that I shall soon hear from you or see you. I remain Faithfully yours, H. Halse. P.S. We have had a great deal of illness here and you have escaped.
