Wellington 12th March 1872 My dear Sir, From Major Noake's telegram reporting that the Patea settlers intend opposing by force the introduction of Natives into the district. I fancy it was merely an expression of his own wishes on the subject. However, you will soon hear from Major Edwards on the true state of things. I have telegraphed to Inspectors Pitt and Cummings your instructions for them to remain in charge of their respective districts. The re-inforcement for Wairoa will leave here by the "Rangatira" on 15th Inst. Should the "Luna" not be employed to carry the Representatives to Christchurch; I think with care the vote will carry all expenses. The Mount Cook Upper Barracks are already for the reception of Immigranta. The Sergeant and two Constables of A. C. are on Soames Island to see the Quarantine Regulations enforced. I enclose you the first of the N. Z. Army lists. Things work smoothly in Defence and A. C. Departments I remain my dear Sir, Yours very truly, W. Moule
