Wellington April 30/75 My dear McLean, I am off today by the Luna for Christchurch. I hope the trip will do me good for I am very weak and seedy. I shall probably go overland to Dunedin with the Governor and after a few days stay there will return. Reynolds wants to go down to the Provincial Council and he can attend to the Governor. Had a long letter from Vogel yesterday. I will let Richardson and Atkinson see it at Christchurch tomorrow, and will then send it to you. It is chiefly taken up with the history of the Loan operation which is very interesting. We have I think been most fortunate in the completeness of the operation. Vogel thinks that much of the disposition to help shown by the Rothschilds is owing to their usual policy of giving help to a co-religionist, in his person, and I think this a probable and reasonable surmise. Warwick Weston asked me to show you a note which he wrote to me relative to the proposed admission of Sir George Grey to the Auckland Club, without ballot. I enclose a copy of it. Geordie thinks election a very fine thing but doesn't like the application of it to himself. I have sent my proxy I think the proposal to make a new rule for the occasion is a piece of the most contemptible flunkeyism. I send you also slips of the English papers re Native question. By the way I sent to you at Maketu by wire copy of a letter said to be from Tawhao to the Governor asking him to come to Kuiti. You have not said anything about it and H.E. has asked me what you thought. I hear you propose to come overland from Napier. It will give you an opportunity of arranging the telegraph difficulty with Peete - the work there is standing still. Reynolds has returned from Auckland and Atkinson and Richardson will be here immediately. All goes well. Yours always truly, Daniel Pollen
