Letter from Donald McLean, Land Commissioner, to the Honble, the Colonial Secretary, dated 17th. September 1850, Reporting proceedings in fixing the inland boundary of the Rangitikei purchase. Manawatu 17th. September 1850. Sir, I have the honor to acquaint you, for the information of His Excellency, the Lieut. Governor, that on the 5th. inst., the inland boundary of the Rangitikei purchase was fixed, and decided upon, at "Te Whau Whau" in the presence of a large body of Chiefs and natives from different tribes; whose co-operation I deemed it advisable to secure for this important service. From all that I could learn, the Whau Whau is the inland termination of the Ngatiapa claim, as a tribe. They have some individual rights, intersected with those of various other tribes beyond; and which, as the present boundary includes all the most desirable and available land, are not worth contending for. The boundary line has been cut for a mile and a half towards the Turakina, from which river it will be necessary to set off a line to meet the present one, as soon as I command Mr. Park's services; who has other pressing surveys to complete, before he can accompany me. When the Turakina line is decided, I will furnish a more detailed report, in reference to this service. I have the honor to remain, Sir, Your most obedient servant, (Signed) Donald McLean. Land Commissioner. To:- The Honble, The Colonial Secretary, Wellington. [COPY of Memo. on back of this letter.] Mr. Grimstone (?) Let a copy of this be sent to the New Zealand Company's Principal Agent, for his information. (Signed) G. Eyre. 23rd. September 1850. Copy of it forwarded to Mr. Fox. 24th. September 1850.
