Dear Sir, As you have kindly offered to undertake on your arrival in New Zealand to look after our interests in the Colony so far as the right of a Town and Country Section of together 100 acres give us any interest, we beg to send you these few lines in order that the New Zealand Land Co's Agent may (if need be) be satisfied that you have full authority to make choice of the land on our behalf; and we enclose you the Company's order herein,-the number of the order we are aware affords us only a middling claim for making a downright good selection so far as the Town acre is concerned; but trusting to your good discrimination we hope to come off better even than many who have a priority of choice, and that you will take for us the most advantageous situation that may be open when our turn comes for selection. It would be quite idle to think of pointing out to you what sort of situation would be the most eligible. Everything as regards choice is left to you. From the plan of the Town which will be submitted to the Colonists, you may perhaps be able to form a good guess as to what site may offer the earliest prospect of becoming of value. Some time will no doubt elapse before the Country sections will be ready for selection. If the Town be seated on a river, the land on the banks of the river above the Town will no doubt be the first in request, and probably you will think it right to look in that direction for the 100 acres you are to choose for us. With whatever choice you make, however, we shall be perfectly content, as we are quite sure we could not have a better judgement to rely upon than yours in a matter of this kind. Should No. 600 prove a choice fortunate enough to produce anything at the outset, of course we shall be so much the more gratified. We hope the Town will out-step all others that have been planted hitherto; and should you be enabled to let any portion of the Town Acre on building lease for a limited period, we shall esteem ourselves lucky. Everything that you may be pleased to do for the improvement of the speculation we shall thankfully confirm. If you let the Town Acre, the lease should be for as short a time as you could arrange for, perhaps five years would be long enough, unless you saw good reason for giving a longer term. We shall be much obliged by your favouring us with a letter stating the choice you make, and the steps you purpose taking on our behalf. The certain prosperity of the Colony will, we trust, enable us to pay out of the speculation, a fair compensation for the trouble you may take for us; and we shall do this gladly out of the first rents the section may yield; and any commands that you may transmit to either of us, we shall cheerfully execute,- in short, whatever it may be in our power to do to reciprocate your good offices, shall have the very best attention. We shall look anxiously for the news of your safe arrival out; and we fully hope that you will favour us with an early account of your prospects after landing.
