Mokau, 20th. August 1852. My dear Sir, I have been unable until just this moment to write anything definite relative to the purchase of land at this place. The natives of the river and the surrounding district assembled yesterday morning by my invitation, I have been in committee till just now. I have just now been pushing them to alter their decision but without effect. They offer to sell at present from the Mouth of the river along the beach to the boundary of Tu Keru's block from their the boundary goes including young Waitara's block for about 2 miles from there by a line parallel to the coast till it meets the Mokau and from there along the E. bank to the Mouth. I am altogether much pleased with my trip here because I am persuaded you have only to come here yourself to buy as much land as you please. The natives have been most anxious to settle and offer this as a mere commencement of their proceedings. The Kuri and Taunui must be consulted before the large block can be offered. Takeru has just left and he will extend his boundary to Waikaiou or the Piamoko North and the inland boundary to Mauia or Rua kaka if you wish it. The Motukarauru to the beach you can purchase if you please, and from the other side of the river to the North bank of Waitara may also be purchased, so says Tikaukau and the Kahaioa. Your presence is required here to ascertain the exact boundary of the land to be purchased. I have just now agreed to survey from the Mouth of the river to the boundary of Takuri's block which at present extends about 15 miles coast-wise and inland heaven knows how far, but the boundary along the Mokau inland say 2 miles I decline to have anything to do with till you arrive because if surveyed you might have a difficult (job) to go beyond, but now it is left an open question for you to decide or not as you wish. I have other reasons besides this for not surveying this boundary which I will offer you when you come here. These I think are the only points of consequence I have to make you acquainted with at present. They themselves will settle nothing in a hurry as you are well aware but until you or Cooper come here nothing further will be done. I remain My dear Sir, Yours very truly, John Rogan.
