March 6, 1857. My dear Sir, In the absence of a direct answer to Ihaia's letter I fear that my position with him will be of unusual difficulty. With regard to Katatore any attempt to induce him to point out the lands which he really claims, would only exasperate him, seeing that he arrogates sole authority over the whole district and the Mangoraka in particular. My only chance to settle the question is to conciliate him, satisfy his pride as best I can and get other important men such as Mahau, Karipa and others to step in at the proper time to drag the land into the sea. No easy task I admit, with such conflicting claimants and bitter jealousies towards each other, you may however rest satisfied that nothing shall be done with the slightest risk of disturbing the peace of the Province. In haste, Faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
