Feb./65 My dear McLean I find from Felix that the Fire on Bare Island was the Maoris cooking, which they are in the habit of doing during the Fishing season - last Saturday our shepherds saw the Success beating about near Bare Island, and on that day the Maoris were fishing and the following morning our shepherds got some of the Fish they caught so I see no advantage to be gained by the man going on so have taken upon myself to desire him to return to Napier which I hope you will approve of. Yours sincerely James Gordon Clifton 4th Feb. 1865
