Napier Aug. 19th, 1870 Dear Sir, You did not reply to my memo. in reference to £120 balance. I hope you obtained all particulars from the Col. Treasury. It seems as far as I can ascertain that I made a mistake in writing to you about a letter Green said he gave me. I am as yet partly in the dark abt. the matter - but as far as I can judge it must have been one from your Secretary ''however it is satisfactory that you did not see necessary to censure me on the matter. Mr. Wilkinson and Hamilton are in great glee about the Railway (expected) and Immigration settlement in the 40 mile bush W - fully expects to victimize the Govt. as he is perfectly certain in order to carry out their scheme it will be necessary to purchase their and grant interest in the Native Run they hold. There is a great cry out abt. the new R. M. here. I must certainly say for your information that he does not consider the public convenience in anyway and the Lawyers have told me they will not practise if he is kept here - of course it may be said if people go to Law they must take the consequence, but it does a certain degree of injury to the Govt. who have placed him in that position. We are having very wet weather that puts me in mind that there are 4 Black Swans on the Lagoon near McMurrays they must I suppose have migrated from Canterbury. All are pleased that the Govt. have been so successful in carrying their measures - and look forward to the Colony making some progress under the new regime of things. There is nothing more that I can think of. Mr. Ormond will tell you all the rest. I have the honor to be Sir Your most obt. St. Geo. Thos. Fannin. I send you a letter H. B. Herald written by ''Lord'' about R. M. here.
