Maketu 15th. June, 1870. My dear Mr. McLean, I send you a few lines to tell you that everything is going on alright again, in this part. Hapurona the Uriwera Chief has been to Tauranga and seen Mr. Clarke, who gave him blankets, shawls etc. I hear that Hapurona intends to bring out a lot more Uriweras. Mr. Clarke came here on the 9th. inst. and has been inland to Ohinemutu and other places. He returned here last night. He has been busy seeing the natives who are now getting their Militia pay. I hear that Mr. Clarke has made it alright with Fox about the Telegraph line, and also about the Bush being cut. A orderly came through here on the 10th. inst. with a Telegram from you to Mr. Clarke. I only got biscuit here yesterday, for the purpose of packing up inland - and I start today for Kaitiriria. Capt. Gilbert Mair and Mr. Gill also leave for Rotorua to pay all the Natives Militia pay. And Mr. Clarke goes to Tauranga. Not a word about Te Kooti - and everything is very quiet I see in the Auckland Papers that the Tauranga Reporters made a great fuss about Fox and the Telegraph - but of course you take no notice what the papers say. I will write again next Week. Fine weather with sharp Frosts Remaining Yours ever sincerely, Herbert F. Way.
