Napier Jany. 20th 1869 Dear Sir I am sorry I could not see you before starting to Taupo with Lambert. I would not have gone but for two reasons, First Mr. Richmond asked me through others at first and said he would be very glad etc. etc. if I would go. Secondly, and principally because I wish to keep Taupo right, or at all events to keep some hold of the district, until such time as you are in power and can put some one there who can do good, and I feel (I may be wrong) that if these new hands (moths round a candle) go tinkering they would spoil the little that is done towards a start. I find that it was His Lordship who prevented me from going up the Coast when you were in Wellington - I refused to go to Taupo at all until Lambert had procured an Interpreter for himself. I refused to interpret - I will do all I can for the good of the place - I have heard some rumour about a party I cannot find out who trying to get a hold of your Maori run in some way - I should hope there is not such a blackguard in the place, I got the hint, so I let you know by first chance. I remain Yours truly S. Locke
