Napier, July 20th, 1861. My dear McLean, I am adding a few hurried lines to my letter to you, having just heard of a vessel sailing today. The meeting mentioned in the P. S. took place yesterday and was very largely attended by Natives from all parts of the Province. It was very satisfactory. The occasion was a feast to open the new Mill at Waha Parata. Many pakehas were there - Carter was too ill to go. They gave us a hearty welcome and a capital dinner. Moananui proposed the Queen's health. Renata repeated all his charges about stealing his land etc., but said very emphatically and repeatedly that the King was not set up in opposition to Her Majesty. Karaitiana said they wd, not consent to give up the King unless Waihi etc. did so, but that the Pakehas should not mind him but let him alone and he would rot away and fall down of himself. Williams is trying to get them to write to Waikato to advise them strongly to give up their mahi takaro, and to say that they will not support them in event of a war. I believe they will do the former, but the latter. I have no time to report officially now but will do so I hope by Worsley. I have written a letter about M. Fitzgd. going to Stewart's Island with me. It requires no explanation here. In great haste, Yours faithfully, G. S. Cooper.
