New Plymouth June 9th. 1850. Dear Sir, I was glad to receive your letter dated Rangitikei, 23rd. May, as well as your last dated Wellington 1st. June. I have not yet seen Tamati Waka, but will tell him what you desire, as soon as he comes into Town; also Honi Ropiha, which must be a fireside- and consequently a cosy - conversation. Your hints in drawing up Agreements will be attended to, when an opportunity offers. Enclosed, is a tracing, showing the land in dispute, North of Waiwakaiho, between Mr. Smart and some resident natives. The sections marked 186, 203, 204 (25 acres), 204 (25 acres), (a road running through the latter, and dividing it into 25 acres each), stand in Mr. Smart's name on the New Zealand Company's map. Those marked in the tracing by me with a X are cleared, in fact form a part of Mr. Smart's farm; which he declares was given to him by the Governor, when Mr. Thatcher was Private Secretary; and that Waitana was present at the time. Mr. Smart understands the Fitzroy boundary, shown in pencil, coming along the original road, and then running at an angle, through section 186 to the river Waiwakaiho. I am not aware that Mr. Smart suffered any interference from that marked with a X, until he went to the spot which I have marked with a and cut down timber. , and is persisted in by Mr. Smart; who, believe, employs a man named Stockman for the purpose of cutting the timber. Honi Ropiha says if Smart continues to persist in cutting wood from the land marked with a , trouble will ensue; and may be the cause of the land marked with a X being taken possession of by the natives as it is outside the FitzRoy boundary, and unpurchased. I have spoken to Mr. Smart, without any effect. Wiremu te Ha, a native belonging to Taranaki, at present squatting on one of Major Lloyd's sections close to the beach, will be guided by your decision. In the meantime, he promises not to cut down any more bush. The Writ from Auckland, on Mr. Webster, has reference, I believe, to the Post Office Department. The sum demanded is £1,000 being amount for which Chilmand and Black, bound themselves as sureties. The schooner Erino is a complete wreck, and I do hope the cause of her coming ashore will be public. The captain and crew were drunk. The former has been so since. Harrsi, the tailor, has gone quite mad. His wife is ill, and one of the boys is almost as bad as the late unfortunate Tom. Mr. and Mrs. Priske have taken Wm. George's farm, and intend to remove the Harris's there without delay. They have already been very kind to the unfortunate family. Neuman was married last Tuesday to Miss Honeyfield at the Henui church, after which they went to Mrs. Gudgeon's, where we all passed a very pleasant day. Neuman was very happy with his wife; and she appeared equally happy with her husband, and may they long remain so. Three days after the wedding party, Watt was thrown from his horse on the beach. His leg caught in the stirrup, when, luckily, his boot came off, and liberated him from his perilous situation. He escaped with concusions, and is now nearly well. I have this moment caught sight of the bride and bridegroom, both looking very well indeed as Neuman would say, beautiful. The Harris' have secured the old Barracks, and will take possession as soon as Mr. and Mrs. Curtis leave for Omata. As far as I know all your friends here are well, and will be glad to see you back again. Yours very faithfully (Signed) H. Halse. To:- D. McLean Esq.
