Police Office, Pehe April 28/45. Sir, Some reports prevail here, which incline me to think that a visit from you would not be amiss. The sum of these Reports, is - that the Wycatto Natives are coming down here to avenge upon us the imagined insult offered by the Bishop, and the threat of the vessel of war, that Scouts have come down recommending the Maori women to leave those white men with whom they cohabit - that the white people are to be plundered, and if they resist, to be massacred and that Turoa, indignant at my complaining to the Governor for the Greenstone outrage, is engaged in preparation to aid the Wycatto's. What dependence is to be placed on these Reports it is impossible for me to estimate - that of the Maori women, has most weight with me - Still, one man says, his woman does not believe it, that they (the Wycattoes) could not come at this season. One thing is certain, that Turoa is building two Pahs about 8 miles up the river, very strong, and very defensible - and the Putaki Pah has been palisaded anew with great strength. Now these are warlike indications, but whether against us, or against one another it will be your province to judge. My hope is that such a measure of retaliation will be dealt out to Heki and his party, as will put a stop to any contemplated outrage, and keep the Tribes generally, quiet. I am, Sir, Your mo. obed. svt., Sam. King, P.M. Mr. McLean, Protector of Aborigines.
