Feby. 13, 1867 I learnt this mg. that Mr. Colenso has placed a letter in Mr. Curling's hands directing him to read it - if he should be proposed for Election - stating that he will not permit himself to be returned for the Town of Napier - or elsewhere. Capt. Buchanan is canvassing for the Town. Mr. France at the Coote Road has left his wife - in a fit I hear of jealousy - Capt. Buchanan has been residing there a long time - immediately after France left Buchanan took up the case of Mrs. France - thereby adding more scandal to the whole transaction. I enclose a slight report that I sent Mr. Wood - not being able to do so inside - I only took notes outside of the open window - for that reason they were not complete by a long way. I also send an extract in reference to Major Green and Capt. Buchanan - Miss Rye sent out in the Montemercy which was to sail on the 5th Dec. 46 Single Girls, 22 single men and 30 families making in all 158 statutes adults. The Club gave a dinner to the Judge on Tuesday evg. about 22 sat down. I have the honor to be Sir, Your most obt. St. Geo. Thos. Fannin. Capt. Buchanan says there is an Act in force that will enable him to get Land for the men engaged at Omaranui and Petane out of the Confiscated Land at Petane - he is determined to try it on.
