Rangitikei Novr 26 1850 My dear Susan It is now some time since I addressed you from the same part of the country and I trust it may not be long before you are able to pay it a visit and admire its beauty if you are not already on the way here. I did not write to you when sending a few lines to Papa as I thought he would mention my probable delay of a few days at Waikanae. Mr Hickson is here and the chances are I will either by him or some other opportunity at greater length before finally leaving for Hawkes Bay. Mr Duncan seemed much pleased with the taste displayed in selecting the children's dresses. The choice was made I believe by you however I gave Mrs Kirton all the credit. Mr Duncan was rather unwell when I was at Waikanae consequently I lived in the small inn which is tolerably comfortable if you have to spend a night there you may resolve to hear more oaths than blessings. At least if the place is as noisy as Scott's was last night when Mr Taylor and his daughter slept there. It was most disgusting to hear the expression used by a parcel of drunken blackguards who we were obliged to get turned out of the house. I had no sleep last night therefore as I intend writing you again before I leave. I must say goodbye for the present and remain Very sincerely yours Donald McLean If you and Mama wish to preserve your beauty the mosquitoes will not disfigure you as yet, one or two are making a little chorus about my ears just as I am writing but they do no further harm.
