Napier 5 March 73 Dear Sir I have not much to write about beyond what you are already acquainted with in connection with the cases before the Native Alienation Commission. Mr. Alexr. has visited Napier and has given me some information which may turn out useful during the investigation. Te Hapuku and I are on the very best of terms, and although he has lodged these complaints he takes your part in his own peculiar way. He says if the Commissioners say you must give him £7000 for the land he will be satisfied and will give you some of the money back and if they say you are to give him nothing he will be satisfied all the same. But which ever way the matter ends he declares that no one but yourself shall occupy Ngatarawa -- It is as plain as possible that the old man has been put up to do what he has done -- the temptation being too great for him to resist. I am going through the Mungaroa accounts with Kinross -- I find it necessary to get all particulars of his sales of goods to the Natives to lay before the Commissioners -- they may not be required in your case but in every case that has already come before them, they have insisted upon detailed accounts being furnished. Turton has agreed to accept the balance due on P. notes in favor of Hapuku I shall hand him a cheque today. Josiah Hamlin is working well in your interests. The Judge made some very severe remarks with regard to Worgan's conduct in some dealings between Paora Torotoro and Sutton. Most people here consider they were untimely, but if half what we hear be true Mr. Worgan stands on very dangerous ground. If anything of importance crops up will telegraph to you. I remain, Dear Sir Most faithfully yours W. McLean.
