Monday June 28th. 1851. My dear McLean, You may well say, in your note of the 9th. inst. that I am known as a bad correspondent - indeed, a most neglectful one, - but it is only To:- D. Mclean Esq. this week that I moved into my own snuggery, this being the first time of my putting pen to paper, free from the slamming of doors, jingling of piano keys, and the hum of many voices. When my ideal of quiet and comfort is carried out, I shall no doubt, relapse into my old habits of an occasional chat with you and other friends, apparently slighted. And now, referring to your enquiries - the Governor's project of issuing Scrip to the unsatisfied holders of land, under the New Zealand Company, has rendered me less desirious of selling the Crown sections in Pihi, inasmuch as it will be in my power to exchange them for others here, which it was always my wish to do:- Nevertheless, I would sell them for a "consideration". Campbell got £20 for one of his; not, if I judge rightly, so well situated as mine. Whether that be the present market value of each, I am, of course, wholly ignorant, my opinion being formed merely from what I hear of the improving property of the Town. Be this as it may, at that price, they may be yours, if you choose to bite; and, until I hear from you, I shall entertain no other questions on the subject Are you interested in the new Bank? It has been proposed to me to become the Local Agent, or Manager:- I am somewhat inclined thereto, but want to know whether the remuneration is tempting enough to be worth the attendant anxieties. Labour of mind, is to me, more harrassing than labour of hands. We had a pleasant dancing bout here last week, to compliment Charles Brown's marriage. Some of the new-comers; are much to be liked. Mrs. Delfoule, Mrs. Humphreys are gems, and improve our parties wonderfully. Humphreys has purchased Newland's place, and is adding rooms. My time to close is come. Workmen want overlooking. Very faithfully yours (Signed) Samuel Popham King
