Napier Octr.12th 1859 My dear McLean, When I arrived at Porangahau I found a clear coast - the Natives were all at Waipukurau about Matthew's affair - they fined him £100. I left the £700 at Cannings and came on here. They have not touched the £3000 yet, but it is I believe to be divided next week. Hourangi, Kopakau and Waka Rewharewha are down on a visit to Ngatikahunganu so all have now met except the Fish himself. I am returning today and shall be at Porangahau the day after tomorrow. From what I hear I don't think there is any chance of settling the question this year. Perhaps it is just as well. After settling (if possible) the Pourerere affair I shall move on to the Ruataniwha, as the Supt. is very anxious to get that Block proclaimed. Col.Russell is back, he has brought W. Cooper's run on the Coast that he held with Roberts, and is going there himself for 2 years, price (including sheep with all their wool) £3,800. No news except that the place is going ahead faster than ever, 25 passengers per Swan yesterday, 25 today per Wonga, and 40 in a sailing vessel called the Zephyr now on the passage from Auckland. Houses are growing up faster than mushrooms. With kind regards to Mr. Strang Believe me Faithfully yours G.S. Cooper
