(Private.) New Plymouth 30th. June, 1852. Dear McLean, Many thanks for getting me the copy of the Ordinance which received on board the Eclair I did not conceive was accompanied with any letters, and put it away with my other packages. On their arrival at my home I was vexed to find that under the wrapper was an envelope covering letters which had thus been unwittingly detained by me. I hope however no inconvenience was occasioned by the delay in their delivery. Capn. King arranged with me to hold office till the end of the month. I have therefore deferred putting on harness until to-morrow, when Capn. King is to resign all matters into my hands. Cooper informs me that the Chiefs connected with the Bell block have taken the money (£30) to settle that purchase and from Stockman I learn that many of the Natives at the Waitara are desirous to sell their lands. The obstinacy of the Pukatapus with regard to the Bell Block having been overcome, I have great hopes that by judicious management on Mr. Cooper's part more land will be obtained, and that a better feeling may be cultivated among both races until like the engrafting of trees a more complete amalgamation may take place, and a pure brotherly feeling may exist amongst us. Pardon this hasty scrawl. Present my respectful regards to Mrs. McLean and Mr. Strang and allow me to subscribe myself, Yours greatly obliged and very truly Josiah Flight.
