Alexandra March 29, 1873 My Dear Mr McLean I have written to Manuwhiri touching the management of his lands near Auckland, I know that for years C.O.D. has been trying to get the control of them in some shape. There is a considerable amount of speculation among the Natives themselves as to the real purpose for which the meeting at Kuiti on April 28th is called. An Aotearoa man told me that it was to "whakaora te mete i Maungatautari" (Meeting of Jany. 21st) Another rumour is that it is for the purpose of discussing the question of Ngatimaniapoto sympathy for Te Kooti, this of course is a Waikato story. Aihipene account that it is for the purpose of giving Tawhiao an opportunity to speak his mind about the attack on the white men is Walkers swamp is probably the true one. Tawhiao has gone again to Kawhia, his young wife Pane Haureki who expects shortly to be confined has been living there for some time, Honara is there also. When I was from home last Takimanu brought the enclosed letter from Te Reinga and some mats, where shall I forward them to? I believe that Topia is now at Te Kuiti -- No other news. I am, My dear Mr McLean Yours very truly W. G. Mair
