Cambridge, 3rd. August 1872. Dear Sir, I supplied the wheat to the natives, as requested, at prices ranging from 6/- to 8/- per bush; and the greater part of it is sown. There were likewise 12 bags of oats supplied as par my telegram at the time you left Waikate; which the natives will sow next month, Ngatikoroki were unable to proceed with their ploughing until they had plough horses. I therefore, although not requested to do so, procured a double set (for one plough) for Ihaia. The contract for building the Native hostelry was taken by Thompson, and is being proceeded with. I shall continue to superintend its erection. He wishes half the money to be paid when all the material is on the ground, and the frame up and weather-boarded. We had another Te Kooti canard lately. I wrote to the Editor of the "Times" privately, about the affair informing him that 3 weeks before the report, that man had gone to Mokau to get out of the way, and that Rewi was simply sheltering him, and that the building of a pa was simply false. Hakinoki and Te Taweri, when I informed them of your answer respeeting their proposed "paremeta" said that they did not wish to make laws, but to smooth matters out between the King Party and Government. I should like, if you thought it advisable, if Taweri were made an assessor, as he has considerable influence, and is a first-rate speaker, and listened to by all parties. You seem to be having a good fight in some questions. I trust and believe you will triumph. Meanwhile, I remain Very truly yours (Signed) John Wilson. To:- The Hon. Donald McLean Wellington.
