Tuesday 13 July 1852 My own dearest Puss I am again at old Whanganui the place from which you received the first letter I wrote you from the coast and the place where I have often thought of you, and thought what a treasure I should have when I possessed you. May Heaven grant that you may ever continue to be so, and that you will ever take delight in walking in the paths of duty and virtue. I frequently think of you and although I am not so anxious about your health as usual still it is a great hardship to be separated from one's only bosom friend. Take care of yourself pet. Do pay some attention to your books, take gentle exercise and do not be out on any account after sunset. Remember that that is always a standing order. I spent one night only at Mr Taylor's. I know pussy does not much like my being too much among young ladies, therefore I anticipate her wishes and confine all my attentions to her to whom I have sworn to be constant and faithful as long as I live. I am packed and ready for my journey which I must commence in about an hour in order to save the tide, therefore forgive a short letter, keep up your spirits and hoping soon to be with you again, I am ever your own affectionate Donald McLean I had no letter from you by last mail. Probably it is gone onto Taranaki. D ML
