Woodlands 26th Janry. 1863 My dear McLean, This respectable gentleman, Mr. Tarawaru of Ngatiwhakave, Maketu, being an ancient acquaintance of mine, desires me to write to you to advertise you of the fact, that he is an extensive claimant to the fertile soil of Heretaunga, because some of his far away tupunas were somehow related to Rongomaipapa!! He laid his case before the Chiefs of Ngatikahungunu who frankly admitted his rights, but hinted that in days gone bye a gentleman of the name of Tukoiwhakahi, of Ngatikahungunu was slain and devoured by Ngatiwhakave which circumstance is supposed to be a bar to Mr. Tarawaru's claim, as his (T's) papa has already eaten and digested whatever claim he might have had through Rongomaipapa. Under these distressing circumstances, seeing that the sellers won't give him any share of the money, of course the purchasers must - and accordingly I am requested to use my utmost influence to induce you to accede to his demands, my reward for which is to be the appointment of R. M. at Rotorua. With such a brilliant reward in view, do hereby accordingly entreat you by everything that you can imagine (but wh. I have no room to write) to pay Mr. Tarawaru a very large sum of money to extinguish his claims to Heretaunga. Your's sincerely G. S. Cooper
